Beyond the Screen: Rethinking Digital Learning and Education

Students Collaborating Together

The future of technology and education holds the potential to transform learning experiences, providing new tools and methods that can enhance understanding and accessibility for all students.

Introduction

Technology. Enlightening, Engaging, Efficient

Digital technology has become an increasingly influential component of contemporary education, shaping how students communicate, learn, socialise and participate in society. As schools continue to integrate digital technologies into teaching and learning, educators must critically consider both the assumptions made about young people's relationship with technology and the potential consequences of participation in digital environments. In particular, the concepts of the 'digital native' and the benefits and risks associated with digital environments raise important questions about how teachers understand and support students. This portfolio critically reflects on two driving questions explored throughout the first four weeks of the unit.

The first reflection examines whether digital natives are a myth or reality, challenging assumptions that students automatically possess advanced digital skills because they have grown up surrounded by technology. The second considers the risks and benefits of digital environments for individuals and others, while examining the responsibility of schools in creating safe, ethical and productive digital learning environments. Using Gibbs' Reflective Cycle, both reflections move beyond personal experience to critically evaluate the theoretical perspectives and implications for educational practice.
